Travel in KL

Kuala Lumpur

Busses, trains and taxis are the three main transportation most locals prefer. Reason is because they are convenient. They'll bring you to your destination and all you need is to walk a little bit as they are all within walking distance, or even better! They stop right at the entrance for you. Busses and taxis are easy to get at the terminals or at their stops respectively or along the road. Trains are available in their stations. There's Putra LRT, Star LRT, Monorail and KTM Komuter. But if you prefer travelling at your own convenient, driving around is the best. Rent a car from car rentals, hop in and you're on your way!

RapidKL
RapidKL

RapidKL is an integrated Bus & Rail public transportation company in the Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur and Selangor). RapidKL is the main service provider of mass public transportation in the Klang Valley via our integrated rail and bus network. They operate the Kelana Jaya Rail Line (previously known as PUTRA) and the Ampang Rail Line (previously known as STAR) together with a network of 161 bus routes. The company's integrated transportation network transports approximately 4 million passengers every week with 908 buses and 48 rail stations operating daily.

Bus

Buses are still the primary mode of transportation among KL folks around the KL City Centre. In conjunction with the effort by the Malaysian Government to welcome tourists into the country, and to encourage more locals to commute via buses, Rapid KL has come up with unlimited day travel for only RM2 promotion. This promotion commenced in 2006 and is the most economical way to travel around the city. All the buses that are used are new buses to ensure that you have a comfortable and memorable ride in the city.

Light Rapid Transit (LRT)
Light Rapid Transit (LRT)

Kuala Lumpur's light rail transit (LRT) system connects some key districts where banks, offices, hotels and shopping malls are concentrated. It's called LRT (Light Rail Transit) and is operated b RapidKL. The Ampang Line (formerly known as STAR line) comprises of a north-south line and another going eastward, while the Kelana Jaya Line (formerly known as the PUTRA line) connects the city's north-eastern section to the west. The two intersect in the central financial district at the Masjid Jamek station.

Northward from here, the Ampang Line has two stations near several office towers before PWTC, which takes its name from the Putra World Trade Centre where The Legend and Pan Pacific hotels are. Southward, the line connects Bukit Jalil, at the doorstep of the National Sports Complex, and Seri Petaling. The eastward line goes to commercial and light industrial areas at Pudu and Chan Sow Lin.

Northeast from Masjid Jamek on the Kelana Jaya Line, there is a stop near the Renaissance and New World hotels before KLCC, named after the Kuala Lumpur City Centre where the Petronas Twin Towers, are located together with the Suria KLCC shopping mall and Mandarin Oriental hotel. The next station is Ampang Park, near more shopping malls and the Nikko and Crown Princess hotels. The same line goes south with stations including Central Market, popular with tourists, before swinging west through parts of the suburb of Petaling Jaya.

Monorail
Monorail

Kuala Lumpur's third Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, the Kuala Lumpur Monorail, began construction in Kuala Lumpur in January 1997. The RM1.18 billion KL Monorail privatisation project is an inner-city public transit system that serves the central business, hotel and shopping district of Kuala Lumpur.

The 8.6km long elevated monorail system begins from the Pekeliling bus Terminal at Jalan Tun Razak in the north, pass through Kuala Lumpur's 'Golden Triangle' (central business district) before reaching KL Sentral in Brickfields. Travelling time from Titiwangsa station to the KL Sentral station would take about 19 minutes.

The KL Monorail serves a total of 11 stations located along the southeast and northeast regions of Kuala Lumpur, namely Brickfields, Bukit Bintang, Bukit Nanas, Chow Kit and Titiwangsa. Of the 11 stations, 4 are used as interchanges to and from the Ampang LRT Line and Kelana Jaya LRT Line. The line's train depot is located between the KL Sentral and Tun Sambanthan stations.

KTM Komuter
KTM Komuter

KTM Komuter is an electrified commuter train service operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad. KTM Komuter's 175 km (109 mi) network has 45 stations. It consists of two lines, namely the Sentul-Port Klang and Rawang-Seremban lines, as well as a shuttle service from Rawang to Kuala Kubu Bharu which was first launched on 21 April 2007.

Transfers between the two main lines can be done at KL Sentral, Kuala Lumpur and Putra stations. Stair-climbing or escalator-use may be required at KL Sentral and Putra, while cross-platform transfers can be conveniently done at Kuala Lumpur. Passengers continuing their journey on the Rawang-Kuala Kubu Bharu shuttle service have to change trains at Rawang station.

KTM Komuter has made shopping complexes and recreational centres more accessible. The Mid Valley station, has proven particularly popular. Other shopping centres located near KTM Komuter stations are Subang Parade, Carrefour Subang Jaya (near Subang Jaya station) and The MINES (Serdang station).

Passengers bound for the Kuala Lumpur International Airport have the option of taking the KTM Komuter to Nilai Komuter halt and board a bus from there to the KLIA or stopping at the KL Sentral station and ride the KLIA Ekspres. Switching to RapidKL Rail network can be done at Bandar Tasik Selatan station for the Ampang Line and KL Sentral for the Kelana Jaya Line. Switching to Ampang Line can also be done at Bank Negara station although it's a 200 meter walk to the Bandaraya station.

KTM Komuter tickets can be purchased at counters or by using Ticket Vending Machines which are available at all stations and halts.

The service is plagued by overcrowding especially during rush hours. To help alleviate the problem, the operator introduced a new queuing system to help riders line up when the trains are coming. The lines are painted on the floor with three colour codes representing each of the train set. The system was first implemented on KL Sentral station on Oct 17 2008. The operator is also considering to introduce express services between Sungai Buloh and Kajang stations and Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam station during rush hour by end 2008.

Taxi

City taxis are metered. In Kuala Lumpur taxis are easily recognisable by their colours. Taxi fares are calculated according to meters. The flagged down fare is RM2.00 for the first two kilometres and 10 cent for every 200m there after (subject to change). A 50% surcharge is levied between midnight and 6.00 AM. Additional RM 1 is charged for: phone booking, 3rd adult passenger (max 4) and/or baggage stored in boot. Pre-paid coupon system is used for taxi stands at KTM KL Station, KL Sentral & KLIA.
