Getting Around Melaka

I bet you’ve never been around a place with trishaws. You can in Melaka as well as in Pulau Pinang if you’ve been there before. Just go to the uncle riding the trishaw and tell him your destination. They’ll bring you there by cycling their trishaw. While you’re on it, keep the uncle company by chatting with him. You’ll find yourself listening to wonderful experience with the person they met. And try to make them forget cycling trishaw is tiring. Or if you prefer a slower pace, you can take into account getting around Melaka by foot.

A cab will take you anywhere you want to go for a fee. You can hail a taxi where ever you are from the road, as they pass by many routes. Do try to bargain your fare although they are required by law to follow a meter, most do not so you can set the amount before boarding.

As Melaka is a small place, taking the bus is an easy way of getting around. There aren't as many jams as big cities like Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown. Stations are available at designated spots around town but do keep coins for the ticket machines as they do not return change. Below is the list of some of the buses you can find roaming in Melaka city:

Melaka Town Bus No 17 (green bus)

Melaka Sentral Terminal to the historic core, Mahkota Parade, Melaka Raya and the Portuguese Settlement.

Melaka Town Bus No 18

Melaka Sentral Terminal to Tengkera and onwards to Pokok Mangga.

Melaka Town Bus No 19

Melaka Sentral Terminal to Ayer Keroh

Melaka Town Bus No. 50

Melaka Sentral Terminal to the Mahkota Parade shopping centre and nearby seafood restaurants

Kenderaan Aziz (red and white)

Buses from Melaka Sentral to Muar via Padang Temu also go past the historic core, Mahkota Parade and Melaka Raya

This hop-on-hop-off bus brings tourists to the attractions in town for a flat fee of RM 2 per day. Among its fleet are 2 double-decker buses, one with an open top. The bus service runs at 10 minute intervals from 6am - 12pm.

Having your own car enables you to save on fares while travelling in town. It is also very convenient and you are the master of your own time and schedule. With a rented car, you can paint the town red throughout the night and not have to worry about getting back to where you are staying.

The ideal way to see Melaka is on the bicycle. This way, you will be able to stop wherever and whenever something catches your attention and there are indeed plenty of eye-catching things in Melaka. Some guesthouses and hostels have bicycles for hire or you can get them from Parameswara Street. Racers and mountain bikes, new and in good condition, can be had for around RM 5 per day.

Melaka is also small enough to see on foot. In fact, there is nothing better than walking around this town admiring the pretty sights. And if you need to make a trip to the other sites outside town, then get some transportation. Otherwise, walking is an economical and eye-opening way to tour Melaka.

The accommodations here range from less than RM100 to over RM400 depending on the hotel rates. Backpackers’ accommodation is also available here. The prices are 30 percent lesser during weekdays. The hotels area is located mainly in Jalan Bendahara while the budget ones are in Jalan Parameswara and Taman Melaka Raya. The hotels here will surely bring you back to the old days.
